Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Home

July 10, 2020

When it’s a hot summer day in Alice, nothing feels worse than figuring out your cooling system isn’t functioning the way it is supposed to. The last thing you should have to do is request cooling system help. But your AC is an exceptionally intricate system, so it can be almost impossible to deduce what’s driving the issue all alone.

That’s why Rescue Heating & Air wrote this guide to help you see what might be happening with your AC. Below, you’ll find some common situtations that explain why your space is feeling a little unpleasant. And while some of these are fairly painless DIY projects, you may still need to turn to an expert for AC repair.

And if you do, Rescue Heating & Air is ready to assist. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your home in Alice.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Could Be Incorrect

Every home uses their thermostat a little differently to fit their personal needs. Despite that, many people make the misstep of setting their system to “On” instead of “Auto.” Because of this setting, the fan in your air conditioner will continue to push out air even when you’ve reached your set temperature.

This can appear like your AC is distributing room temperature air, when in reality it’s only employing the fan more often than necessary. Swap this setting and determine if things seem better.

2. Your Home Comfort System Needs to Be Cleaned

There are two central spaces to look for dirt or dust collection when your HVAC doesn’t feel like it is operating right.

First off, inspect your HVAC filter. If you don’t replace your filter often enough, built-up dust can make it hard for air to flow through and cool your house. If your filter is visibly dirty or dusty, it’s probably time for a substitute. (And in general, you should replace it about once every three months at the very least.)

If your filter is looking clean, go to your outside unit. Make sure there’s enough clearing around your air conditioner and clear away plants or dirt close by. This part of your home comfort system discharges the heat from inside your rooms. If the coils outside are blocked, you won’t be feeling cool indoors.

We recommend setting professional air conditioner maintenance each year to keep your unit operating like it should and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your System is Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the stuff that cools down the air in your space. It goes between your inside and external system pieces to grab and release heat, to help your rooms keep comfortable. If there is a crack along that system, you won’t be comfortable again until you book professional air conditioning repair.

Indicators of a refrigerant leak include a drop in cooled air, more expensive utility charges, frozen evaporator coils and odd hissing noises arising from your AC.

If you think refrigerant may be leaking, call Rescue Heating & Air for system repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be detrimental to your family’s health.

4. One or More Parts Should Be Replaced

Your air conditioner is made up of a a handful of important parts. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one part is not working, your home comfort declines.

Our Rescue Heating & Air technicians are trained and skilled in all areas of HVAC. They can help you find and mend any trouble.

5. Your Whole System Needs to Be Upgraded

If your system is more than 10 years old, it may be time to research new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it simply won’t work as well as it did when it was new. And it may be making your house less comfortable.

If your AC is more current but still isn’t keeping you cool, it may be undersized for your house. Air conditioners are not one-size-fits-all. An air conditioner that’s undersized just can’t cool a house the way a correctly sized system can.
